Successful first week for the 2010 BIP at CBD SBSTTA!

Posted: 18 May 2010

The 2010 BIP has been extremely successful in raising its profile during the first week of the CBD Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (CBD SBSTTA 14). The week started with the launch of the third edition of the Global Biodiversity Outlook (GBO-3) the flagship publication of the CBD. The 2010 BIP was acknowledged for its significant contribution to the report, in particular the ‘Biodiversity in 2010’ chapter.

The partnership also hosted two well attended side events. The first held on Tuesday 11th May presented the partnerships work on capacity building for national indicator development. The second on Wednesday 12th May focussed on global indicator development, giving an update of recent progress and a review of an international expert workshop on biodiversity indicators. Findings of the recent 2010 BIP paper published in leading journal Science were also presented by the papers lead author, Stuart Butchart.  Stuart Butchart also represented the 2010 BIP at other side events to present the results of the Science paper, including a side event organized by the CBD Secretariat, UNEP-WCMC and Diversitas entitled, ‘Global Biodiversity Outlook-3: Progress towards the 2010 target, future prospects and implications for the post-2010 strategic plan’.

One of the biggest successes of the week was the recognition of the Partnerships work within the ‘In depth review of the programme of work on the biological diversity of inland water ecosystems’ (UNEP/CBD/SBSTTA/14/3).  The acknowledgement added by request of the parties features in paragraph 29:

SBSTTA recommends that COP 10 ‘notes the importance of robust data on inland water species in determining the status and trends of these ecosystems, including as key underlying data for other assessments and initiatives, including, inter alia, the third edition of the Global Biodiversity Outlook and the 2010 Biodiversity Indicators Partnership, and expresses its appreciation to those organizations, initiatives and individuals responsible for generating and maintaining these datasets.’
